Pairing Silk with Leather

A silk scarf tied on a leather bag is one of the best small details you can add. Done well, it looks effortless. The secret is that it's less about matching colors and more about matching warmth.

1. Find your leather's undertone

Take your bag to a window. Cognac and tan lean warm. Black, espresso and taupe lean cool. Warm leather likes warm scarves, and cool leather likes cool ones. Indoor bulbs make everything look warm, so check in daylight.

2. Repeat one color, just one

Find a single color in the scarf that also shows up on the bag, in the leather, the stitching or the hardware. Let that be your anchor. Everything else in the scarf can do its own thing. Matching two or three colors starts to look too planned.

3. Tie it with a little slack

For a handle, wrap the scarf twice and knot it, leaving a finger's width of room so the silk doesn't crease. For a strap, fold it thin and tie it once. On a small bag, one corner through the zipper pull is enough.

4. Check it against your outfit

A scarf and bag can be perfect together and still fight with what you're wearing. Before you leave, look at all three at once in the mirror.

5. Untie it now and then

A scarf left knotted for weeks creases, and on light leather in humid weather it can leave a faint mark. Every few wears, untie it, let both rest, and tie it fresh.

Quick fixes

• It keeps sliding off. Wrap twice before you knot.
• It looks too matchy. Drop the second matching color.
• It looks tiny on a big tote. Tie it on the strap instead of the handle, or move it to a smaller bag.
