A good silk scarf is the most useful small thing you can own. It goes around your neck, into your hair, onto a bag handle. The trick is finding one you actually reach for on a regular weekday.

Start with the fabric

Look for 100% silk. Blends trade away the soft sheen that makes silk look like silk. If a label just says "silky," it probably isn't.

Weight matters too. Very thin silk wrinkles fast and snags on jewelry. A medium weight twill holds a knot all day and still drapes nicely.

Then check the hem

Try this five second test. Run a finger along the edge. A hand rolled hem feels slightly raised and a little uneven, because a person rolled it with a needle. A flat, perfect zigzag means it was finished by machine.
